We have owned 6a Loch Carnan for 15 years, the cottage is a black house and is approximately 200 years old. Situated at the north end of the beautiful island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, on the shore of Loch Carnan, a sea loch which runs into the Minch. There are views towards the Isle of Skye to the east, and the mountains of Hecla, and Beinn Mhor to the South. The Outer Hebrides, (also known as the Western Isles) are famous for their expanses of beaches and flower rich machair. The hills and mountains are equally inspiring and on a clear day a walk in the hills can be rewarded with marvellous views out to St Kilda (Hirta) to the west, and eastwards across the Minch to the isles of Rhum, Skye, and the mainland beyond.
The photograph below shows the view from the front of the cottage.
Our cottage has no television, no wifi and no internet access; as our 'getaway from it all' place we have never felt the need for anything that distracts from the views and the wildlife. By sitting on the sea wall outside, we often see white tailed eagle, golden eagle, hen harrier, otter and common seal.
The list of species that we have seen at the cottage is phenomenal; and any lover of natural history will find all the entertainment that they need either at the cottage or elsewhere on these beautiful islands.
That said we do have a radio, a cd/MP3/USB music system, so you can watch nature unfold to the music of your favourite soundtrack. Vodafone mobiles do get a signal in the kitchen and most mobiles get a signal outside.
Electricity, bed linen, tea towels and towels are included in the price. In the bedroom is a king size bed, wardrobe, two bedside cabinets, chest of drawers and overhead storage space. The bathroom has a small bath, an electric shower and an electric towel rail. The living room also has cupboard space for storage should you need it.
The kitchen is well supplied with cutlery, crockery, baking equipment, electric cooker, toaster, microwave, bread-maker, fridge with small freezer compartment and washing machine. Other items at the cottage include; electric heaters, electric fire, hot water immersion heater and
There is a shed adjacent to the house where bikes may be stored and which contains a tumble drier ironing board and iron, barbeque and outdoor furniture.
The garden extends to 1/3rd of an acre, has a salt marsh, small heathland and a range of well established bushes and trees. Many birds nest in the garden, we also have a resident hedgehog, and an otter regularly uses the garden as a sleep over. In theory, the garden is dog secure, we have dogs and they have yet to escape.
Although the cottage is situated in a private and secluded position it is close to local amenities.
